Science

Whole family cycled instruction

Our science curriculum is crafted by a certified science teacher to offer an enriching and dynamic educational experience for students of all ages.

The curriculum follows a 4-year cycle, with each year dedicated to a different area of scientific study: biology, environmental science, physics, and chemistry. Over the course of these years, students will develop a deep understanding of core scientific principles, exploring everything from the complexity of living organisms to the fundamental laws of nature. Middle school and high school students will engage with interactive, hands-on activities, experiments, and labs that bring theoretical concepts to life, all while reinforcing what they learn through comprehensive lessons.

In addition to online resources, these students will be encouraged to apply their knowledge through real-world projects, group collaborations, and critical thinking exercises. These activities not only deepen their grasp of scientific concepts but also foster skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and scientific inquiry.

For younger learners in preschool through 5th grade, the curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and make science fun. Through a variety of engaging activities such as experiments, storytelling, and outdoor exploration, students will begin to understand basic scientific ideas in a hands-on, interactive way. At-home assignments, videos, and supplementary resources further reinforce key topics, helping students solidify their understanding of the material in an enjoyable and accessible manner.

To support both students and parents, all at-home assignments are carefully outlined in both the session agenda and workbook. This provides a clear structure for learning while allowing for flexibility and personalized exploration, ensuring that students stay on track while also fostering their curiosity and love for science.

History/ Social Studies

Whole family cycled instruction

Our social studies curriculum is thoughtfully designed by experienced educators to offer a well-rounded and dynamic learning experience.

The curriculum follows a 3-year cycle, each focusing on a different historical period to help students develop a broad understanding of world history. The first cycle covers Ancient to Middle Ages, exploring early civilizations and the foundations of modern society. The second cycle delves into the Middle Ages to Modern history, highlighting key transitions, innovations, and historical figures. The third cycle explores the Modern Era, focusing on global events, political movements, and the social changes that have shaped the contemporary world.

For middle school and high school students, the curriculum provides a balance of in-depth study, critical thinking exercises, and hands-on projects that encourage students to connect historical events with present-day issues. These projects allow students to explore historical topics creatively and analytically, fostering a deeper appreciation for the complexity of history.

For preschool through 5th grade students, the curriculum offers age-appropriate activities designed to engage young learners. These activities are complemented by interactive videos, assignments, and additional resources that reinforce key concepts and promote active participation in learning.

All at-home assignments are clearly laid out in the session agenda and workbook, ensuring that students have a structured and organized approach to their studies while offering ample opportunities for exploration and critical reflection.

The history/social studies program coordinates with Classical Conversation Cycles. Our history program is perfect for those families looking for a deeper dive into their weekly timeline exposure.

IEW-Institute for Excellence in Writing

Writing Program coordinated with History Cycles

The Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) employs a teaching methodology akin to the instructional approaches used in music, art, and sports. Students commence their learning journey by analyzing and emulating exemplary writing pieces. Through a series of incremental steps, they gradually acquire the skills necessary to craft original compositions. This structured and systematic approach ensures that students build a solid foundation in writing, enhancing both their confidence and competence.

Our IEW classes are designed with a block scheduling format, encompassing two periods interspersed with several active breaks. This extended timeframe allows for a more deliberate pace of instruction, accommodating students of varying abilities. It provides ample time for note-taking, in-class practice, and initiation of homework assignments under teacher supervision. This approach not only reinforces learning but also reduces the workload at home, fostering a more balanced and effective educational experience.

IEW classes at The Knowledge Nest will coordinate for any students who are currently enrolled in Classical Conversations.

Writing Workshop

In conjunction with an IEW class

The Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) offers a comprehensive and structured approach to teaching writing, known as the Structure and Style® method. This method provides clear, step-by-step instructions, making the learning process effective and enjoyable for both educators and students. However, for many parents, especially those unfamiliar with this process, assisting their children at home can be challenging. Recognizing this, The Knowledge Nest has developed Writing Workshops to bridge the gap between classroom instruction and at-home support.

These Writing Workshops are open to all students enrolled in an IEW class, regardless of location or level. The workshops aim to assist students with their at-home assignments, provide real-time feedback to address any questions, and alleviate stress associated with writing tasks. By participating, parents become more involved in their children’s education, a factor IEW identifies as crucial for student success. Through these workshops, The Knowledge Nest empowers parents to confidently support their children’s writing journey, ensuring a seamless and stress-free experience at home.

Book Club

age-appropriate book studies that coordinate with our science and History curriculum

Our homeschool co-op book study provides students with a dynamic and engaging literary experience that enhances their understanding of history, science, and literature. Each session features an age-appropriate book selection that aligns with current history or science topics, fostering a deeper connection between subjects and encouraging interdisciplinary learning.

Students will participate in both in-class discussions and at-home activities designed to develop comprehension, critical thinking, and analytical skills. In-class activities may include group discussions, hands-on projects, and creative presentations, while at-home assignments will encourage further exploration through journaling, research projects, or related experiments.

By integrating literature with core academic subjects, this book study helps students build meaningful connections between stories and real-world concepts. The rotating book selections ensure variety and engagement, making reading an exciting and enriching experience for all participants.
